John F. Hamilton, MD, PhD, serves as the Medical Director of the Inova Peripheral Nerve Program, Inova Health System, Co-Medical Director of the Inova Spine Program at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Section Chief, Neurosurgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital and as a physician in the Inova Neurosurgery practice. He is on the faculty team in the Inova Neurosurgical Residency Program and is an Associate Professor in the department of neurosurgery at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, Inova campus.
He is a graduate of Meharry Medical College, is an award winning neurosurgeon with ABNS board certification and post-resident fellowship training in complex spine at the prestigious Cedar Sinai Institute for Spinal Disorders. He completed his neurosurgical residency at Henry Ford Hospital, home of the prestigious Hermelin Brain Tumor Center. He also completed a fellowship in peripheral nerve surgery with Dr. David Kline and Dr. Robert Tiel at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. He has practiced in Northern Virginia for more than 12 years.
Dr. Hamilton takes a patient-centric approach to treating patients with complex neurosurgical issues of the brain and spine with the goal of alleviating pain, restoring function, and treating the patient in a multidisciplinary approach. His extensive background gives him a unique perspective when analyzing challenging neurosurgical issues.
Dr. Hamilton's work on pituitary adenomas is influenced by a variety of factors, including his work at the National Institutes of Health under Ed Oldfield. He is methodical, untiring and takes a scientific perspective that is partially dictated by his PhD in neurophysiology. Early experience with preeminent neurosurgeons and ongoing involvement in the vanguard of neurosurgical procedures has also shaped his approach in providing patients with the highest level of treatment to address their needs.
A native of Manhattan, NY, Dr. Hamilton currently resides in Great Falls, VA, where in his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family, being an avid reader and training for marathons.
