Maternal-Fetal Medicine
Fairfax, VA 22031
Dr. Monica Longo is a specialty care physician board certified in maternal-fetal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology at Inova Health System. She joined Inova in 2022 and has been practicing since 2007.
Prior to joining Inova, Dr. Longo worked as an associate professor in the maternal-fetal medicine division of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
Since 1996, Dr. Longo’s research has focused on the cardiovascular adaptations during pregnancy and its dysregulation as occurs in preeclampsia, hypertension, metabolic syndrome and diabetes. As a natural extension, her research veered toward investigating the implications of an adverse uterine environment on the long-term health of offspring, particularly as it relates to fetal programming of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Similarly, her research involves assessing long-term maternal health following adverse pregnancy outcomes, given that pregnancy is considered a “window to future health.” Pregnancy provides a new window of opportunity for early heart disease risk screening and intervention for women and their children.
Dr. Longo has also developed an interest in drug delivery in pregnancy using nanotechnology to deliver maternal and/or fetal therapy with better targeting, allowing for improvement in drug efficacy while decreasing therapeutic dosing and side effect.
