About R.J. Elbin, PhD

Dr. R.J. Elbin is a clinical research partner to the Inova Sports Medicine Concussion Program. Dr. Elbin received a doctorate in kinesiology from Michigan State University in East Lansing and completed a two-year postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Sports Medicine Concussion Program.

Dr. Elbin’s research focuses on identifying factors that contribute to concussion risk and prolonged recovery and best practices for management and treatment in concussed youth and adolescent athletes. Dr. Elbin has authored or coauthored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and 200 professional presentations on sport-related concussion. Dr. Elbin was a 2018 recipient of an Early Career Award from the Sport Neuropsychological Society for his work in concussion research.

Since partnering with the Inova Sports Medicine Concussion Program in 2018, Dr. Elbin has helped the Inova Sports Medicine Concussion Program secure several large research grants including a randomized, controlled trial of targeted treatment for concussion from the Department of Defense. This research productivity is a result of an ongoing research partnership between Inova and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where Dr. Elbin is also an Associate Professor of Exercise Science and directs the Office for Sport Concussion Research.
