Dr. Stephen Kim is the Medical Director of Children’s Surgery at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus and Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital and Chief of Pediatric Surgical Specialties for Inova. He is a specialty care physician board certified in pediatric surgery and general surgery with advanced expertise in minimally invasive and robotic surgery. His clinical interests include surgery for newborn congenital diseases, cancer surgery, colorectal surgery and thoracic surgery.
Dr. Kim is a graduate of the University of Virginia College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Chicago, where he served as chief resident. He completed a surgical research fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, followed by a pediatric surgery fellowship at Seattle Children’s Hospital. He is a Professor of Medical Education at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Inova Campus.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kim has served in leadership roles both locally and nationally including chair of the performance improvement and patient safety committee , surgeon champion for the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, member of the practice committee of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, and member of the delivery of surgical care committee and the membership committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Surgery. He is a passionate advocate for improving the surgical care of children through multidisciplinary collaborations, standardization of care and outcomes research.
Dr. Kim grew up in Northern Virginia and enjoys the beauty and four seasons that it offers. Outside the office, he enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, skiing, and attending sports events, especially for the ‘Hoos.
