Dr. Timothy Yu is a board-certified and fellowship trained primary care sports medicine physician. He joined Inova in 2023 and has been practicing since 2013. Dr. Yu is a registered musculoskeletal sonographer and is certified as a point-of-care ultrasound generalist. Dr. Yu specializes in musculoskeletal ultrasound, ultrasound-guided procedures and ultrasound as a tool for enhanced diagnostics at the bedside.
Prior to joining Inova, Dr. Yu worked as Clinical Faculty of Family Medicine and Sports Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University-Bon Secours St Francis Family Medicine Residency Program and Sports Medicine Fellowship in Richmond, VA.
Dr. Yu is a native Virginian. During his residency, he served as chief resident and was a recipient of the Renaissance Award for Excellence in recognition of all seven medical tasks of the Trivium-Quadrivium and the Family Medicine Resident Award for Scholarship from the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors and the North American Primary Care Research Group. He also worked as an urgent care physician during his time in Richmond.
After completing his residency, Dr. Yu completed a sports medicine fellowship at VCU – Fairfax, which is part of the National Capital Sports Medicine Consortium. His sports medicine experience includes serving as a fellow team physician for the Washington Commanders, the NFL Combine, the Washington Nationals, the Potomac Nationals, the LPGA Championship at Kingsmill, George Mason University, VCU, the Marine Corps Marathon, the Army 10 Miler, the Reston Triathlon, the Monument 10K, the A10 Track and Field Championship, the A10 Men’s Soccer Championship, the CAA Women’s Basketball Championship, the Special Olympics, the Washington Ballet, DC Divas, Skatefest and local high schools. He has also provided sports physicals for athletes at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Catholic University and Marymount University.
Dr. Yu has a passion for medical missions and has led trips to West Africa, providing care for hundreds of patients in remote villages over the years. His research was accepted at the World Organization of Family Doctors Africa Conference, and he has led courses on sports and exercise medicine at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has also volunteered at the White House Summit on Asian American and Pacific Islanders and completed a federal health policy internship at the United States Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration.
Dr. Yu has taught medical students, residents and fellows from VCU, Georgetown University, the University of Virginia, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and Fort Belvoir. He continues to remain involved in academic medicine, staying true to his calling to train the physicians of tomorrow.
Locally, Dr. Yu has been a physician leader for community health fairs for a local Native American tribe, volunteered in emergency medical services and was an advocacy council member for the Medical Society of Virginia. He recently received the Residency Director and Faculty Certification Scholarship from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and currently serves on the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors and as a team physician for George Mason University Athletics.
