2019 was another banner year for Inova Loudoun Hospital regarding research, evidence-based practice and quality improvement projects. Our nursing staff had two articles published in 2019. The Impact of an Active Music Therapy Intervention on Patients in the Intensive Care Unitby Amanda Golino, MSN, RN, CCNS, CCRN, RN-BC, Ray Leone, MMT, MT-BC, Debbie Stanger, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Cathy Christopher, Med, CCC-SLP, Theresa Davis, PhD, RN, NE-BC, CHTP, Mary Ann Friesen, PhD, RN, CPHQ, Anthony Meadows, PhD, MT-BC, LPC, Zhiwei Zhang, PhD, and Audra Gollenberg PhD, was published in the American Journal of Critical Care in January 2019. A second article, Creating a Sensory Friendly Pediatric Emergency Department, authored by Elyssa Wood, PhD, RN, CPEN, Allyson Halverson, BS, CCLS, CTP, Gina Harrison, MSN, RN, NE-BC, CEN, CPEN, and Amanda Rosenkranz, PhD, MSN, RN, CPEN, was published in the Journal of Emergency Nursing.
We also had 14 podium presentations at the local, regional, state, national and international levels. Ken Frese, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC and Megan Placido, BSN, RN4, PCCN presented their Bundle Up for Falls EBP project at the Sigma Theta Tau International Conference in Washington DC in November 2019. Elyssa Wood, PhD, MPH, RN, CPEN, Gina Harrison, MSN, RN, NE-BC, Sarah Stinson, BSN, RN, CPEN, Kristina Presgrave, BSN, RN, CPEN, Erin Rovelli, BSN, RN, Mary Ann Friesen, PhD, RN, CPHQ, had a podium presentation at the national ENA conference in Austin, Texas in September for their Video Discharge Instructions in the Spanish-Speaking Population research project.
In addition, eight posters were presented at the local, state, and national level with three poster winners. At the local level, at the Inova Research and EBP Conference in December 2019, the poster Assessing the Survey Instrument: Perception of Opioid Use Survey (POUS) authored by Alison Burton, BSN, RN, Lindsay Schoem, BSN, RN, TCRN, Scott Mueller, BSN, RN, Alison Smolsky, DNP, RN, NE-BC, Stacey Metcalf, BS, Debbie Stanger, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Elyssa Wood, PhD, RN, CPN, TCRN, Mary Ann Friesen, PhD, RN, CPHQ, Scott Barnett, PhD, MSPH, and Lisa Levinson, MSN, RN, Assistant Professor, Shenandoah University, won the Voter’s Choice award.
The Psychosocial Benefits of Music Therapy for Hospitalized Antepartum Patients authored by Jaimee Robinson, MSN, RN, RNC-OB, Marie Tolliver, BSN, RN, RNC-OB, Ashley Crowther, BSN, RN, Jennifer Truax, MSN, FNP-BC, RNC-OB, Mary Ann Friesen, PhD, RN, CPHQ, Debra Stanger, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Carol Swamidoss Douglas, PhD, RNC- Inova Loudoun Hospital and Inova Fairfax Medical Campus; Johanna Horn, MT-BC, Anthony Meadows, PhD, MT-BC, FAMI, LPC, Shenandoah University, won first place for Best Overall Poster at the Fall 2019 VNA Conference in Richmond, VA.
The Video Discharge Instructions in the Spanish-Speaking Population research poster (referenced above) also won the ENA’s Best Research ePoster at the national level.
