Inova’s Advanced Practice Providers (APPs)

Located in northern Virginia, the Inova Health System employs over 500 physician assistants (PAs), nurse practitioners (NPs), and certified nurse midwives (CNMs) throughout its five hospitals and more than 180 ambulatory care sites. Inova Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) partner with physicians, nurses, administrators (and other APPs, such as nurse anesthetists) to care for a diverse patient population. Inova APPs fill essential roles in all eleven service lines and serve as significant contributors to our patients and care teams.

APP Leadership & Professional Governance

Advanced Practice Provider Professional Governance is a Congress of Inova APPs across the health system who meet regularly to discuss issues involving APPs.

Bobby Cockram Jr., DMSC, PA-C, serves as System Director, Advanced Practice Providers. He has held this position since May 2021. Bobby works with Inova's senior leadership, service lines, and hospital leaders in overall coordination and management of APPs throughout the health system.

APP Fellowships at Inova

Over 45,000 APPs enter the workforce each year upon graduation. As care complexity has evolved, postgraduate clinical training programs have responded, growing in popularity across the United States to better support APPs transitioning into their first roles. The first PA fellowship was developed in New York in the 1970s; now, multiple specialties exist among hundreds of programs.

In 2021, Inova launched its first postgraduate clinical training program for APPs in critical care. Subsequently, a program for APPs in neurosurgery went live.
