The UVA School of Medicine, Inova Campus Office of Student Affairs coordinates services to ensure medical students are able to successfully navigate the medical school curriculum, promote a feeling of community and maintain balance in their personal and professional lives.

Student Services FAQ

The students are a part of the same student government that is on the main campus. They directly connect via televideo for meetings and conduct activities locally.
The students can get assistance with letters from the Student Services office on the Inova campus. Student Services assists with various aspects of student housing while at Inova.
There is no charge for parking while on the Inova campus. It is free for students with an Inova Fairfax Medical Campus ID badge.

The students have full access to preventative and therapeutic services through the student health services program at Fairfax Family Practice Primary Care located at 3650 Joseph Siewick Drive, Fairfax, VA.

The students can choose where they live during their third and fourth year. The Student Services provides resources to aid in the selection process to include student survey feedback on where students currently live and how they like it.
  • The Jacob D. Zylman Health Sciences Library is an on-site medical library at the Inova Campus. All Inova students are provided with 24-hour access to the library, which includes subscriptions to journals, texts, and online resources. There are three study/conference rooms and 16 individual study carrels as well as tables for group work in the library.
  • The Self-Directed Study room houses over 18 dedicated study carrels that are secure in the Claude Moore building. These will be utilized only by Inova Campus students.
  • Lecture Room 2 features individual study carrels complete with desktop computers for electronic testing.
  • There are dedicated student call rooms.

The inpatient and outpatient clinical clerkship experience during Phase 2, will be primarily at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus (IFMC) and outpatient clinics within the surrounding community. The Phase 3 or Post-Clerkship curriculum will include a required Emergency Medicine Course at IFMC, required ACEs (Advanced Clinical Electives), ICU rotations, and electives at Inova Health System or the main campus in Charlottesville. These rotations will be available through the lottery system and open to students on both campuses.

The Careers in Medicine Program at the UVA SoM Inova Clinical Branch Campus builds upon the longitudinal curriculum for advising from the pre-clinical years at Charlottesville. Our integrated curriculum is designed to support medical students through selecting their paths in medicine, navigating the residency application process, and helping develop career planning skills. On arrival to Inova, career exploration continues with an orientation workshop, specialty exploration events, surveys of specialty interests, and meetings with the student affairs dean. Phase 3 support focuses on the residency application process with workshops including: CV and personal statement, Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and National Residency Match Program (NRMP), interviewing 101, and mock interviews. Career Advisor Training and supportive programming occur throughout the academic year and is specialty specific.

Taking you where you want to go – physically, mentally and spiritually

The maintenance of wellness throughout the clinical years of training is of paramount importance – the tools acquired now will help you to ingrain lifelong habits and promote well-being to your patients. During your clerkship and post-clerkship years in medical school while on the UVA Inova campus you will find a little extra support through the GPS/ATMS Student Wellness program. A key component to the success is the involvement of students in the planning, programs, and promotion of wellness. The student wellness committee has student officers from each class who serve as student officers for wellness.

Some of our programming includes:

  • Monthly personal growth programs (e.g., RDN taught cooking class, indoor arts and crafts, poolside cookout, cat café visit and team building escape rooms).
  • Phenomenal fitness facility partner with Inova Well at the Joan and Russell Hitt Center for Healthy Living to include a monthly floor pass, unlimited monthly in-person and virtual class passes, one 30 minute massage every 6 months and one 30 minute personal training session every 6 months.
  • Inova Well Being Index: A Mayo Clinic online self-assessment tool that measures six dimensions of distress and well-being in just 9 questions. This gives us the opportunity to assess the medical student burnout and how to improve well-being with data instead of guesses.
  • Community service opportunities (e.g., Inova StarKid 5K and fun run).

The Inova Campus students have full access to preventive and therapeutic services through the student health services program at Fairfax Family Practice Primary Care (FFPPC) - an Inova Partner. Fairfax Family Practice Primary Care is located at the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Campus and the hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. - noon on Saturday. Virtual appointments can be done on Sunday from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. There is an on-call physician 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including holidays.

Staffing consists of 52 physicians including residents, 6 sports fellows, 9 mid-level providers and 35 nurses. None of these providers are involved in the academic evaluation or promotions decisions of the students.

Mental Health Services

UVA Inova campus ensures that all student needs are met by providing personal and mental health services available by four different methods:

  • Students may choose to seek counseling in the community as the student health insurance plan provides mental health coverage.
  • Students on the regional campus may choose to seek counseling at the main campus in Charlottesville in person, via telephone, or via televideo conferencing.
  • Local mental health services are available with George Mason University (GMU) counseling services. The services at GMU are provided by five licensed clinical psychologists, a licensed clinical social worker, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, five psychology interns and three psychology externs. Hours of operation are Monday, Thursday, and Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Tuesday and Wednesday 8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. A counselor is available readily after hours for urgent mental health concerns. The contact for the CrisisLink 24-hour hotline is also provided to students.
  • A relationship has also been established with a local board-certified psychiatrist to see all medical students who request consultation on an acute, subacute, or chronic basis. This provider does not participate in the teaching program.
