Treatments for Neuro-Ophthalmological Disorders
Treating neuro-ophthalmological problems depends on the cause of the issue. Your doctor may recommend one or more of the following treatments available either at Inova hospitals, an Inova outpatient facility, or the office practice:
- Botox – Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) is the first biological toxin used in the treatment of ophthalmic diseases.
- Lumbar Puncture – A lumbar puncture is done to remove a small amount of CSF for testing to help in diagnosis of various conditions. This procedure can be done at Inova facilities.
- Medications
- Corticosteroids – pills or an injection to help prevent vision loss and ease pain or visual discomfort
- Acetazolamide used for LLH
- Onabotulinumtoxina (Botox) – weakens or paralyzes muscles causing the condition
- Surgery – Please note our practice can coordinate with, and refer to, Inova Neurosurgery if surgical treatment is recommended:
- Ease pressure and save vision
- Shunt placement – surgically inserting a special tube, or shunt, in the brain to drain fluid and ease pressure
- Visual Evoke Potentials – This test can diagnose problems with the optic nerves and other visual pathways in the brain that affect sight.
- Visual Field Testing – A visual field acuity test is a painless test that determines how well a person can see. The test maps central vision as well as peripheral (side) vision.
