John J. Moynihan, MD, FACS
Chair, Department of Surgery
Inova Fairfax Hospital
The Inova Surgery Residency Program is a vital part of the fabric of healthcare provided on the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Falls Church, Virginia. As Northern Virginia’s only American College of Surgeons (ACS) Accredited Level 1 Trauma Center, we provide only the highest level of care for our patients. Inova has become the northern campus of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. As a not-for-profit healthcare provider, Inova re-invests into programs, staff, services and technology to improve the health of the diverse community it serves and to meet its commitment to excellence in patient care, education and research.
The Department of Surgery is leading the way in creating an environment that allows teams of healthcare professionals to deliver the highest quality clinical care, research and education. We are doing so through a forward looking, dynamic strategy that is optimized by strong partnerships with our nursing and anesthesia colleagues. The accreditation of the Advanced Surgical Technology and Education Center (ASTEC) as an ACS Accredited Education Institute is a tangible manifestation of our goals. This surgical simulation facility allows Inova to create high-functioning, highly reliable and efficient surgical teams that deliver seamless perioperative care, furthering its efforts around patient safety and improved patient outcomes. The dedicated resident education sessions allow residents to master surgical skills in a safe environment and provide opportunities for mentoring by one of our core teaching faculty members.
I am pleased to report that the department continues to attract the best and the brightest into its educational programs. Our residency program is strong and has matured to 35 residents over five years. In addition to our residency program, we offer fellowships in surgical critical care, bariatrics and vascular subspecialties (limb salvage).
The Department of Surgery continues its focus on excellence in clinical work, scholarly research and dedication to education and training. We are expanding our full-time faculty and engaging our community partners as we actively drive innovative approaches to care delivery through integration with medical subspecialty partners in oncology, gastrointestinal disease, and cardiovascular disease to name a few. The expertise of all of our surgeons, combined with leading-edge technologies, translates into shorter hospital stays and better outcomes for our patients. This steadfast commitment to exceptional patient care combined with the pursuit of scientific discovery will be the cornerstones of the department as we move forward.
We are committed to providing superior residency education, and I am proud of the amazing surgeons we train. We welcome your interest in our Surgery Residency Program and urge you to explore our website for more information.
