Team Structure
There are six inpatient services on general surgery. The trauma/critical care and acute care surgery team is made up entirely of trauma/critical care fellowship-trained surgeons. With roughly 3,000 trauma admissions a year, residents on the service see the whole gamut of blunt and penetrating trauma. Four helicopters service the Inova Trauma Center. Patients from Northern Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia are brought by air and ground to our faculty. Attending surgeons are in-house 24 hours a day.
The vascular team consists of nine full-time vascular surgeons. Our vascular surgeons provide the complete spectrum of conventional and endovascular services in state-of the-art vascular suites.
The colorectal service includes seven full-time colorectal fellowship-trained surgeons who perform several hundred major colon procedures annually. The service includes strong experience in both open and laparoscopic procedures, as well as robotic-assisted colectomy.
Three additional teams are staffed by general surgery core faculty and include all aspects of general surgery: alimentary tract, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, breast, endocrine, abdominal wall, bariatric, surgical oncology, skin and soft tissue and advanced minimally invasive surgical procedures.
Additional rotations are also offered in pediatric surgery, multidisciplinary breast surgery, minimally invasive surgery, endocrine surgery, endoscopy, thoracic surgery, transplant surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, anesthesia, cardiac surgery and ICU. Offsite elective rotations are also permitted.
