Curriculum

I. Orientation (1 week for internal residents, 3 weeks for external residents)

  • Inova New (Inova's new team member orientation held on the first day of residency)
  • Comprehensive orientation to the operational and clinical services provided by the Department of Pharmacy; includes departmental competencies, aseptic technique, online learning modules
  • Orientation to the residency program, including the residency manual and policies, The Standard (including the purpose statement), applicable competency areas, goals and objectives (and applicable Appendix for PGY2 residents), and required and elective learning experiences
  • Electronic medical record (i.e., EPIC) training (typically during the week of Inova New)
  • Resident lecture series, to include a session on well-being and resilience
  • All residents: BLS, ACLS certification if not currently certified
  • For PGY2 residents: Internal residents must only complete orientation to the residency program and the session on well-being and resilience

II. Clinical Rotations

Residents will be exposed to a wide variety of required and elective experiences, 5 weeks in duration unless noted otherwise below, as well as longitudinal experiences that last the duration of residency. The schedule will be determined by the resident and the residency program director during the orientation period but can always be subject to change.

PGY2 Emergency Medicine Program (5 weeks each unless otherwise noted)

III. Decentralized Pharmacy Practice (~42 weeks)

  • Starting in September (2) 8-hour shifts every 3rd weekend in ED (224 hours)
  • (1) 8-hour shift on one major and one minor holiday (additional 16 hours)

IV. Practice Management (48-50 weeks dependent on duration of orientation)

  • Protocol/guideline development
  • Participate in interprofessional committees and workgroups related to EM practice
  • Develop pharmacy team training/education related to EM initiatives 
  • Develop and deliver an educational presentation for providers and/or nursing
  • Participate in the EM team’s Fun Fact Friday education (once/quarter)
  • Assist with nursing education (@ least 2 presentations)
  • Resident will have one project day per month (August-June) to assist with completion of practice management activities

V. Research (51 weeks)

  • Includes IRB submission, presentation of results at regional/national conference, and completion of manuscript suitable for publication
  • Includes 4 project days (1/quarter)

VI. Teaching and Precepting

  • Serve as co-preceptor for an APPE student of PGY1 resident during Adult/Pediatric EM II
  • Serve as primary preceptor for an APPE student or PGY1 resident during Adult/Pediatric EM III
  • Faculty appointment at VCU School of Pharmacy - IFH Campus
  • Co-facilitate the VCU Foundation Skills Lab focusing on resuscitation

VII. Required Projects/Certifications

  • Continuing education presentation, ACPE accredited
  • Medication Use Evaluation (12-week block scheduled in Q3)
  • Case presentation
  • Topic-based presentation
  • PALS • ATLS (audit)
