It is located on a 50+ acre campus ten miles west of Washington, DC. The medical campus actually houses six integrated institutions (Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova L.J. Murphy Children's Hospital, Inova Women's Hospital, Inova Schar Heart and Vascular and Inova Schar Cancer). Combined, these institutions have over 900 inpatient beds. The site is also the location for the University of Virginia School of Medicine (UVA) – Inova Campus.

In 2018 the faculty of Inova Women’s Hospital delivered over 10,000 neonates; performed over 9,000 gynecologic surgeries; and attended over 25,000 clinic visits.

On January 31, 2016, we opened the new Inova Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Our new facility provides a state-of-the-art physical environment in which our residents learn and practice. This 12-story, 665,000-square-foot building was designed with 33 labor/delivery beds, 120 maternity beds, 48 high-risk perinatal beds, a 14-room obstetrical and gynecologic surgical suite, a 108-bassinet Level IV NICU and an outpatient Antenatal Testing Center.

Inova Fairfax Hospital has a long tradition of supporting outstanding graduate medical education. The hospital currently has fully accredited independent residency training programs in family medicine, general surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics and podiatry as well as affiliated residency programs in emergency medicine and psychiatry. The campus is also home to independent fellowship training programs in pediatric emergency medicine, psychosomatic medicine, minimally invasive /bariatric surgery and surgical critical care. This broad institutional commitment to graduate medical education allows for the effective and collaborative training of over 100 residents during the academic year.

OB-GYN departmentDepartment of OB-GYN

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is one of the largest academic departments at Inova Fairfax Hospital with a total attending staff of approximately 130 physicians.

The residency program has a core teaching faculty consisting of 40 generalist obstetrician/gynecologists, six gynecologic oncologists, fourteen perinatologists, four reproductive endocrinologists, eight urogynecologists and seven minimally invasive gynecology surgery trained physicians. Fellows in maternal fetal medicine, gynecology oncology, and female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery contribute to the educational and research experience of our residents.

This combination of high clinical volume, a large teaching faculty, individualized curriculum, strong mentorship program and access to unique research opportunities makes the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Inova Fairfax Hospital an ideal place for training.

Learn more about Inova

The mission of the Inova Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program is to train the future workforce of compassionate and exceedingly competent obstetricians and gynecologists who will be prepared to care for a diverse community of patients. This is accomplished within the larger mission of Inova Health System, to provide world class healthcare – every time, every touch – to each person in every community we have the privilege to serve. Inova is fortunate to serve a growingly diverse community including a robust community based free clinic which provides comprehensive clinical experiences and an exceptional foundation in general obstetrics and gynecology. The program prepares residents for careers in academic and private practice general obstetrics and gynecology as well as sub-specialty fellowships with its large teaching faculty and volunteer community doctors who practice in every derivation of the field. Opportunities provided through mentorship, support for scholarly activities, and involvement in multidisciplinary patient safety and quality improvement projects and committees enable our trainees to be competent for independent practice and leaders in women’s health.

How do we achieve this mission?

  • We aim to recruit and retain a workforce that reflects the community we serve through both a holistic recruitment process and creation of a supportive clinical work environment that creates a sense of belonging.
  • Focus on health equity training, anti-racism education and advocacy for vulnerable populations throughout clinical care in the four-year curriculum.
  • Provide the highest quality education and training through didactic, simulation and practical experience to prepare physicians for a lifetime of practicing the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Exposure to a wide range of patients. This includes a variety of disease processes, various socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Inova Health System is fortunate to serve the community of Fairfax County and the surrounding metropolitan Washington, DC area. This region is very culturally diverse, as evidenced by the fact that 182 languages are spoken at home (Fairfax County elementary school statistics). Residents learn to embody respect for the ideals of equity, diversity and sensitivity and to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, other health professionals, health-related agencies and the public. Housestaff care for patients who qualify for our free clinic as well as privately insured clients form the Inova Medical Group Practices.
  • Mentorship to develop skill to locate, appraise and assimilate evidence from scientific studies related to their patients’ health problems and demonstrates the essential skills to develop and conduct scholarly activity and research and to formally present findings.
  • Development in residents as teachers. Our residents receive training to confidently teach patients, colleagues, students, allied health personnel, and the public.
  • Provide leadership opportunities to allow residents to advocate for improvements in healthcare systems and community health through leadership and work in multidisciplinary teams, and demonstration of reverence for the roles and skills of the members of the health care team. Our residents have leadership roles within the program, GME, department of ob/gyn, and throughout the hospital system.
  • Provide tools that ingrain lifelong habits to help prevent complications of stress and burnout while allowing young physicians to promote and teach well-being to their patients along their professional journey.

Inova is an Anti-Racist, Anti-Discrimination Health System

Racism is a public health crisis that continues to damage our communities, patients, families and team members. Systemic racism perpetuates inequities in education, employment, housing, environmental quality, nutrition, health, and, of course, healthcare. All of these create barriers to living a full and healthy life.

At Inova, we denounce racism and discrimination in all forms. In keeping with our mission to provide world-class healthcare to every person in every community we have the privilege to serve, Inova commits to continuing our active role in advancing long overdue change toward anti-racism and anti-discrimination. This includes continuing to critically examine and address our own systems and outcomes, partnering with our communities on actions that promote and support health equity, and advocating efforts for broader change.

Additionally, we have zero tolerance for racist or discriminatory behavior at any Inova facility. Anyone witnessing or experiencing an incident should report it immediately to Inova staff or security. We reserve the right to discharge violators and revoke visitation privileges.
