Chairman's Welcome Letter

George "Larry" Maxwell, MD

Chairman, Inova Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program

We are delighted that you are considering applying to our residency training program. There are multiple attributes that make our program unique and sought out by applicants.

First of all, we are one of the ten largest women’s hospitals in the country, providing over 10,000 obstetrical deliveries and over 5,000 gynecologic surgeries to the patients in the communities we serve. Our residents not only have a high volume of patients but are exposed to a variety of pathology which is further enhanced by referrals from other Inova hospitals in the region. This exposure enables our graduates to be highly competent whether pursuing a career as a generalist or additional subspecialty training.

Another attribute that makes our program unique is the diverse patient population that our trainees care for, representing a wide range of socioeconomic, racial and ethnic backgrounds. Learning to care for patients from a variety of different origins is an experience that enables our graduates to provide better care with cultural sensitivity prioritizing the patient’s experience.

Finally, the research opportunities that we have at Inova make our training experience extraordinary. Trainees are encouraged to engage in quality improvement, simulation supported provider and teams based performance improvement, or education based research. There is a plethora of clinical, translational, and population health based research opportunities, many of which are aligned with the Women’s Health Integrated Research Center. In this facility, we have over 40 scientists, physician investigators and technicians that support the tri-federal Cancer Moonshot Program in partnership with the Uniformed Services University. In addition, we have additional research teams supporting our Maternal-Pediatric Research program in which we have analyzed over 8,000 whole genomes on over 4,000 families in partnership with premier programs across the world. These potential research experiences support our trainees no matter whether they are preparing for a career as a generalist or developing a competitive resume in applying for subspecialty fellowship training.

Thanks so much for your interest in learning about our program. The training that we offer at Inova is aligned with a group of house officers and teaching faculty that create a family atmosphere in one of the most beautiful metropolitan cities in the United States. Our teaching faculty and physician leadership feel that we can provide you with one of the best training experiences in the country.
